What are eco friendly homes and why do they matter?

We are all becoming increasingly aware of the need to live more eco friendly lives. From the food we buy to the transport we choose, more and more of us are making conscious decisions to minimise our use of fossil fuels and impact on the environment.

This eco friendly mindset can extend to every aspect of our lives, even when selecting property to rent or purchase. So, if playing your part for the planet is important while you house hunt and you’re looking for eco friendly houses for sale, buying a new build home could be a good move. Here’s why…

  1. Recognised targets

Developers strive to meet recognised environmental targets e.g. the Code for Sustainable Homes: an environmental assessment method. It’s reassuring to know developers are held to account and you can look and see how your specific developer is performing.

  1. Building materials

The construction materials of new builds are usually very energy efficient and, where possible, responsibly sourced.

  1. Insulation

New builds have excellent cavity wall insulation meaning they are good at retaining heat… and not wasting energy.

  1. Glazing

In a new build you can expect at least double… sometimes triple glazing in your windows. That’ll certainly keep the draughts out and the heat in!

  1. Efficient white goods and boiler

Developers will usually make sure any white goods they supply are A+ rated for efficiency. It’s highly likely you’ll also benefit from a modern, compact and efficient boiler which will boost efficiency and minimise emissions.

  1. LED lighting

Unlike older buildings, eco-friendly houses will make optimum use of LED lighting, which is extremely energy efficient.

  1. Location

When buying a new build home, it’s likely to be in a great location. Developers try to pick sites near parks and green spaces, or even incorporate them into the development itself. They are almost always close to a bus stop and/or cycle routes too, encouraging ‘green’ transport for residents.

  1. Other features

You may notice other bonus features when buying a new build home, for example rotary clothes lines to discourage tumble dryer use; electric car charging points; and cycle storage racks to make bike ownership hassle free.
